Speaking Life and Death
“The Master, God, has given me a well-taught tongue, so I know how to encourage tired people. He wakes me up in the morning, wakes me up, opens my ears to listen as one ready to take orders.”
In the first chapter of Genesis, we are told that God created the heavens and the earth – light; He separated it from the darkness that was already there, and He created the space between the waters, the sky. He created land and seas, plants and vegetables, the sun and moon and other planets, the stars, and animals of both land and sea. He did this all by simply speaking it into existence.
Proverbs says that:
“…[listen carefully to my words] for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.” (4:22)
“The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.” (10:32)
“The words of the wicked are like a murderous ambush, but the words of the godly save lives.” (12:6)
“Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.” (12:18)
“Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.” (13:3)
“Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” (15:4)
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” (18:21)
“Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.” (21:23)
What we speak affects us and those around us greatly. We have the authority through Christ Jesus to speak both life and death over people – kind of a scary thing, if we don’t know what we’re doing. If we’re truly seeking Christ and desiring to live like and for Him, we’ll desire to only speak life and blessing over others. Throughout the next several days, I want to take the time to go through a book called Taming Your Tongue by Deborah Smith Pegues, to understand just how dangerous it is if we’re not controlling our mouths. Then after we get done with that short series, I’d like to look into how powerful we are in Christ, and how we have the ability to speak life over all and every situation in our lives, how we can live in the full abundance, joy, peace and life that He desires us to live in.
“To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” -Matthew 13:12
The Bottom Line: As we start in on this series, pray that your heart is turned to be more like Christ’s, and that we begin to fully understand the importance of doing well with what we’ve been given, even in the little things such as how we speak to others and ourself.
